The Acid Test

Early summer, 1643, 26th Year of War

Gustav had moved in with Martin in the larger room on the second floor. While Anike was happy to have the cozy little room upstairs all to herself, it also made it harder for her to carry out the Imperial Count's task.

She muttered to herself the title of the book she was to steal from Martin. "Codex Daemonum." She hadn't managed to even search for the book yet. She had been Martin's apprentice for several weeks now but was never able to enter his and Gustav's room alone. She hadn't found any indication that the book was even in the house. She didn't want to admit it, but she liked the life she was living now.

The only annoying thing was that she was in constant competition with Gustav. He understood much more about the actual craft of healing and about demons, but she knew more herbs than he did. She also spoke much better Latin and had beaten him by only her third fencing lesson, which now happened with pleasant regularity. Anike knew this annoyed the boy beyond measure, and she enjoyed it. She hadn’t spoken to him again about the demon she had seen in the ossuary, but he still regarded her with suspicion. Anike was sure by now that he didn’t believe she was Diethelm's former apprentice, yet he did not say a single critical word about her to his master. Both knew something about each other's secrets and were just waiting for the big reveal. Martin had grown quite fond of her in the meantime, becoming something of a father figure.

And you’re supposed to kill him. Anike went cold when she thought about this second assignment. That she would go through with it was beyond doubt. The fate of her father was more important.

Anike looked at her reflection in the small window. She’d been wearing more modest and comfortable clothing for a while now. Martin hadn't told her to do this or said anything about it, but she felt he treated her with more respect when she kept her charms covered instead of using them to gain advantages for herself. She watched the hustle and bustle of the slowly reblooming city. Summer had arrived early, and the mild temperatures brought back the Leipzigers’ joie de vivre and inimitable sense of humor. She enjoyed the hours she could spend up here alone studying, even though she knew that this life would soon be over. The season of war was here. Summer would bring the large battles again and the feldsher would be following the troops. Anike had no intention of leaving Leipzig with him. She had to finish her assignment. The Imperial Count's network was wide, and he would not accept failure. If Anike did not finish the job, one of his hired assassins would eliminate her no matter where she hid. She sighed. She had no other choice.

A knock brought her out of her thoughts.

Gustav, she thought, annoyed. "What do you want?"

"The master wants to see us.
